Everybody needs a GRAMPS.

I'm Dan Barton. Six grandkids call me GRAMPS, and somewhere along the way it stopped being a nickname and started being the job.

This is where I leave the stories, the laughs, and the things I wish somebody had told me at thirty.

Pull up a chair. The coffee's already on.

I'm 71. Factory worker, pastor, chaplain, husband, grandfather — in roughly that order, with a lot of mistakes in between. None of it was wasted. That's the whole point of this place.

What You'll Find Here

Three Things. That's It.

Stories

The ones that only get told with the coffee going — mine, and a few I was trusted to carry.

Humor

Seventy-one years is funny if you tell it right. I laugh at myself first — there's plenty of material.

Hard-Won Wisdom

35 years pastoring. 16 as a hospital chaplain. 15 in hospice. 47 years married. I've sat in the rooms most people avoid.

A Note About GUS

GRAMPS Unique Style

I write with what I call GUS Style — GRAMPS Unique Style.

GUS doesn't follow all the literary rules.

GUS uses … where others don't find them.

GUS Capitalizes Words That are there to Hook You.

GUS loves alliteration and a good visual moment on the page.

If my writing looks a little different — that's not a mistake. That's GUS.

Written for the man who hasn't willingly read a book since high school.

Who's GRAMPS

Dan Barton

Most people who know me well call me GRAMPS — partly because I have six grandchildren, and partly because that's just who I've become.

I was a pastor for 35 years across six states. A Hospital Chaplain for 16. A Hospice Chaplain for 15. I've sat with people in the hardest moments of their lives — and I've had more than a few hard moments of my own.

I've been married for 47 years. That's not a footnote. That's a credential.

I'm 71 and I'm just getting started. That ought to tell you something.
